The Takoma Music School, founded by Indian-American brothers Nikhil and Rohit Rao, celebrated its first anniversary on Aug. 24.
The event, held at the school’s premises on Westmoreland Avenue, brought together students, instructors, families, and local music enthusiasts for an afternoon of performances, learning opportunities, and celebration.
The free, public event featured live music from instructors and local artists, food, school tours, and opportunities for guests to meet teachers and sign up for free introductory lessons. Attendees also gained first access to the school’s new recording studio, offering professional music recording and mixing services.
Reflecting on the school’s journey, co-owner Nikhil described the past year as both challenging and rewarding. “We've laid the foundation for something meaningful, and I’m excited for the next chapter—growing our community, types of lessons taught, and continuing to share the joy of music with newcomers and veterans alike,” Rao said. He added that the new recording studio, led by audio engineer Amal Handley alongside himself, would serve as a valuable resource for aspiring artists.
Co-owner Rohit Rao emphasized the importance of supporting musicians through high-quality production. “It is important to record a song with the right tools, equipment, and most importantly understand the artist and their vision,” he said. The Rao brothers also offered discounted production rates during the celebration.
Since opening, Takoma Music School has become a hub for both beginners and advanced learners, offering lessons in guitar, drums, piano, bass, vocals, songwriting, DJing, and music production. With formally trained instructors and state-of-the-art soundproof studios, the school seeks to provide an environment where students of all ages can explore and develop their musical potential.
Nikhil Rao, known as Niko, is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist with over two decades of experience in music performance, management, and community development. His brother, Rohit Rao, an accomplished drummer, is widely respected for his ability to inspire learners of all ages. Together, they founded Takoma Music School to create a vibrant, community-centered hub for music education.
