Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 13, met Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, the only known survivor of the Air India flight AI-171 crash that killed at least 260 people. The meeting took place at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, where Ramesh is undergoing treatment.
The Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed seconds after taking off from Ahmedabad International Airport on June 12, ramming into a nearby medical college hostel.
The plane was bound for London Gatwick and was carrying 242 passengers and crew. Among them were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian national.
Ramesh, 40, was seated in 11A near an emergency exit and reportedly managed to jump out, according to local police. It remains unclear whether he exited the aircraft before or after impact. He was travelling with his brother and returning to the UK after visiting family in India.
Modi visited the crash site earlier in the day to assess the situation firsthand. He was accompanied by Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, State Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, and senior officials. A total of 25 people are receiving treatment at the facility.
Modi’s visit comes amid ongoing investigations into the cause of the crash. According to reports, the aircraft, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, had only recently undergone a routine maintenance check.
