Mamta Singh made history as Jersey City’s first Indian American Councilwoman-at-Large, taking her oath of office on the Bhagavad Gita at a public inauguration held on Jan. 15 at New Jersey City University (NJCU),

Singh was sworn in in the presence of prominent Indian American leaders, including New Jersey State Senator Raj Mukherji and Assemblyman Ravi Bhalla, alongside dozens of community members who gathered to witness the milestone. The moment marked a significant step forward for Indian American representation in Jersey City’s civic leadership.

The ceremony itself unfolded with full civic pageantry. Senator Andy Kim administered the oaths. James Solomon, who ascended as Jersey City's 50th mayor delivered his speech delivered a speech pledging a government focused on affordability and opportunity for all residents. His administration, he vowed, will deliver on “big dreams” while making sure that, at the same time, local government is working towards improving the everyday things that impact quality of life.

City Clerk Sean Gallagher served as master of ceremonies, while honor guards from the Jersey City Police and Fire Departments—escorted by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department Pipes & Drums—led a formal procession.

The Aidan C. McMullen Chorale of St. Peter’s University performed the national anthem, faith leaders from across Jersey City delivered the invocation, and a student from St. Joseph’s School for the Blind led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance.

In a further signal of increased Indian American representation in city government, Mayor Solomon also announced the appointment of Keshav Poddar as Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development.
