Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds met with India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi on Sept. 8 to discuss ways to strengthen India-US economic relations.

The meeting came as Reynolds leads a 20-member trade and investment delegation on an eight-day mission to the country, with stops in Delhi, Pune, and Mumbai.

Later that day, Governor Reynolds delivered the keynote address at DialogueNEXT, a symposium organized by the World Food Prize Foundation in collaboration with CIMMYT, the Borlaug Institute for South Asia, and the Indian Council for Agricultural Research. Speaking to food system stakeholders, she highlighted Iowa’s contributions to global food and energy security.

“Iowa produces 10 percent of America’s food supply with just over three million people,” Reynolds said, stressing the role of innovation in biotechnology, precision agriculture, and renewable fuels. She noted that food security is “inseparable from energy security,” citing Iowa’s leadership in ethanol and biodiesel as a model for affordable and clean energy solutions.

Reynolds' visit builds on her 2024 trip to India, during which she established initial ties between Iowa and Indian businesses. The mission seeks to deepen those connections, expand agricultural exports, and explore investment opportunities in both markets.

“Our visit to India last year kicked off a number of relationships between Iowa and Indian businesses and trade associations and furthered conversations on investing in Iowa and market access for certain Iowa agricultural products,” Reynolds said prior to the trip, adding that she looked forward to “solidifying those relationships and establishing new connections on which to build.”

The governor’s itinerary includes a business panel with the Sehgal Foundation, an agreement signing with the Indian state of Maharashtra, and roundtable discussions with U.S. and Indian trade councils.

The delegation includes Iowa Economic Development Authority Director Debi Durham, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig, and agricultural and business leaders from the state.
