Indian-origin scientist at Yale links amino acid to weight loss

Dixit’s team found a potential pathway for human metabolic health improvement.

Vishwa Deep Dixit, an Indian-origin scientist and professor at Yale School of Medicine, has found that cutting out one specific amino acid—cysteine—from the diet could promote fat burning and weight loss, even when consuming high-fat food. The findings, published in Nature Metabolism, reveal a potentially groundbreaking link between cysteine and the body’s ability to convert white fat into energy-burning brown fat.

Dixit, who grew up in Hisar, India, and trained as a veterinarian before completing his PhD in Germany and postdoctoral research in the U.S., led the Yale team behind the study. He told Yale School of Medicine, “All of these findings were completely unexpected. And when that happens in science, it’s tremendously exciting.”
