An Indian-origin entrepreneur was fatally stabbed on a CapMetro bus in Austin earlier this month.
The victim, 30-year-old Akshay Gupta, was seated on the bus when he was suddenly attacked by 31-year-old Deepak Kandel, also of Indian origin, according to the Austin Police Department (APD).

Kandel has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder. According to an official APD statement, officers and emergency medical services Gupta was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Investigations revealed that Kandel had been seated next to Gupta on the bus when he suddenly and without provocation stabbed Gupta in the neck. After the bus stopped, Kandel calmly exited with other passengers and fled the scene on foot.
He was apprehended shortly thereafter by APD officers. During questioning, Kandel admitted to the stabbing, stating that Gupta resembled his uncle.
CapMetro expressed deep outrage over the incident, emphasizing their commitment to passenger safety and full cooperation with law enforcement during the ongoing investigation.
Gupta was a prominent figure in the tech community, known for his innovative contributions to health-tech startups. He co-founded FootBit in Austin, a company dedicated to enhancing mobility and balance for senior citizens.
A graduate of Penn State, Gupta had previously been invited by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to showcase his groundbreaking innovations. He had recently declined a lucrative offer from Amazon to continue developing his startup and had been awarded the O-1A visa, recognizing individuals with extraordinary abilities in science.
