Indian-American poet and lyricist Ashok Gupta released a new Hindi patriotic anthem, on August 10, ahead of India’s 79th Independence Day.

The song, Hum Hai Bharatwasi, celebrates the country’s unity and achievements, paying tribute to soldiers of Operation Sindoor, – India’s strikes on terrorist and military targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir after the Pahalgam terror attack – and scientists behind Mission Chandrayaan, which made India the first nation to land near the Moon’s south pole in 2023.

Produced under the label RRAGa Duo, which Gupta co-founded with singer-composer Ritu Rawat, the track features vocals by Rawat and Nikhil, with music arranged at Dynamic Studio, Panchkula. Guitarist Pawan Kumar and flautist Ravi Singh contributed to the instrumentation.

The song has been described as a contemporary echo of Kavi Pradeep’s Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon. Since its release, it has gained traction on social media, with creators producing reels and covers. It is intended for use during Independence Day and Republic Day events in schools, colleges, and public celebrations.

Gupta, an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and IIT Kanpur, has lived in the United States for more than five decades and is currently based in Los Angeles.  A former vice president and general manager at Xerox Corporation, he began writing poetry in 2022 at the age of 74, shifting from rhyming prose to songs in Hindi and English. He is a recipient of the President of India Gold Medal for academic excellence.
