Indian American lawmakers have welcomed a federal court ruling that blocked President Donald Trump’s effort to strip Planned Parenthood and its affiliates of Medicaid funding.
Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (IL-08) called the ruling a win for reproductive health care. “Just weeks after standing with Planned Parenthood of Illinois, I’m heartened the courts have blocked President Trump’s cruel attempt to defund them.”
“This is a victory for reproductive health care—and for every American who depends on it,” he said in a social media post. “I’ll keep fighting to protect access to care.”
Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, also welcomed the ruling, saying, “ This is a big win. We’ll keep fighting to ensure millions of Americans have access to the health care they need and deserve.”
The court ruling was delivered by U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani, a Massachusetts-based judge of Indian origin. Talwani said the law unfairly singled out Planned Parenthood for punishment without due process, which she ruled is likely unconstitutional.
“Plaintiffs are likely to establish that Congress singled them out with punitive intent,” she wrote, adding that the legislation unlawfully burdened Planned Parenthood members and their affiliates.
The provision in question was part of President Trump’s recently passed One Big Beautiful Bill Act. It aimed to block Medicaid funding for any tax-exempt organizations affiliated with abortion providers — even if those organizations do not themselves perform abortions.
Planned Parenthood had warned the law would have “catastrophic” consequences, potentially forcing nearly 200 of its 600 health centers to shut down across 24 states.
