Prime Minister Narendra Modi has delivered an impassioned and politically charged defence of India’s farmers and fishermen in response to the United States’ latest tariff assault, declaring that the country would not bow to “external pressure” — even if the cost is high.
“This government will never compromise on the interests of farmers, livestock keepers, and fishermen,” Modi told delegates at the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in Delhi, just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods. “I know I will have to pay a heavy price for this. But I am ready.”
