India has welcomed the planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Aug.15, 2025, citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s repeated statement that “this is not an era of war.”

In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said, “India welcomes the understanding reached between the United States and the Russian Federation for a meeting in Alaska on 15th August 2025.” The ministry added, “This meeting holds the promise of bringing to an end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and opening up the prospects for peace.”

Trump announced the summit on his Truth Social account, calling it “the highly anticipated meeting” between himself and Putin. He said it would take place “in the Great State of Alaska” and that further details would follow.

According to the Kremlin, the two leaders will focus on “options for achieving a long-term peaceful resolution to the Ukrainian crisis,” describing the process as “challenging” but one that Moscow will pursue “actively and energetically.”

This will be Putin’s first visit to the United States since 2015, when he met then-President Barack Obama.

Speaking at the White House during the signing of the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace accord, Trump suggested that a potential deal on Ukraine could involve exchanging land. “We’re going to get some back, and we’re going to get some switched. There’ll be some swapping of territories to the betterment of both,” he told reporters, adding that details would be discussed later.

However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected any suggestion of territorial concessions. In a message on Telegram, he said, “The answer to Ukraine’s territorial question is already in the constitution of Ukraine. No one will and no one can deviate from it. Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier.”

The White House said Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, met Putin in Moscow for three hours ahead of the announcement, describing the talks as “highly productive.”

The summit announcement comes days after Trump imposed a 25 per cent tariff on India over its imports of Russian oil.
