The partnership will advance cutting-edge research, promote student and faculty exchanges, and drive joint initiatives in sustainable energy, artificial intelligence, materials science, and disaster resilience. It also paves the way for industry-academia co-creation, bridging research with real-world application, a joint statement noted.

Further strengthening this collaboration, both institutions signed a Dual Doctoral Degree Program agreement. “IIT Bombay’s partnership with Tohoku University marks the beginning of a powerful new chapter in global academic cooperation. By establishing the Joint Institute of Excellence and the Dual Doctoral Degree Program, the institute reaffirms its commitment to building impactful international alliances that advance knowledge, foster innovation, and deepen cultural and educational ties between India and Japan,” IIT Bombay said in a statement.

The ceremony was graced by several dignitaries, including Sibi George,  Ambassador of India to Japan; Gakuji Ito, Director-General, Higher Education Bureau, MEXT, Japan; Kanji Fujiki, director-general, JST’s Sakura Science Program; and Kazuhiro Aoki, managing director, The 77 Bank. Delegates from Tohoku University were led by president Prof. T. Tominaga. The IIT Bombay delegation included chairperson Sharad Kumar Saraf, director Shireesh B. Kedare, and other senior faculty.

The event followed a successful Global Immersion Program hosted by IIT Bombay in March, where visiting Tohoku students praised the institute’s vibrant academic culture.
