As the world marked the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) on June 21, 2025, iconic landmarks from Times Square to Gyeongbokgung Palace transformed into open-air yoga studios.
With this year’s theme, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” the day witnessed thousands coming together across continents to celebrate India’s ancient gift to the world — yoga — in its full spiritual and physical glory.
New York City’s Times Square hosted a massive celebration known as Solstice at Times Square, drawing nearly 10,000 participants for a full day of yoga. Veteran Indian actor Anupam Kher joined the crowd, bringing a touch of Bollywood to the bustling cityscape. Seven sessions were held throughout the day, making the event one of the largest Yoga Day gatherings in the Western Hemisphere.
At the UN Headquarters in New York, diplomats, yoga teachers, and global citizens came together in a powerful celebration of holistic health. Organized by the Permanent Mission of India to the UN, the event featured a guided meditation by renowned wellness expert Dr. Deepak Chopra, yoga demonstrations by the Art of Living Foundation, and remarks from Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, who emphasized yoga’s global resonance and India’s philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the world is one family. More than 1,200 people took part in the sessions.
Near the Eiffel Tower, hundreds of yoga enthusiasts came together for a peaceful morning of asanas and mindfulness. Organized by the Embassy of India in Paris, the event commemorated the 10th Anniversary of IDY in France. The celebration served as a cultural bridge, reinforcing yoga's role in promoting physical and emotional wellness in global cities.
In Singapore, the celebration unfolded at the iconic Gardens by the Bay, where hundreds gathered beneath the Supertree Grove. The event focused on breathwork, movement, and meditation, underscoring yoga’s relevance in urban wellness. Participants of all ages embraced the ancient practice as a modern tool for stress relief and inner balance.
Tokyo’s event, held at a prominent venue, was inaugurated by Yoshiko Ishiba, spouse of Japan’s Prime Minister, and attended by Satoko Iwaya, spouse of the Foreign Minister. With over 2,000 participants, including diplomats and local leaders, the celebration saw an address by Ambassador Sibi George and blessings from Reverend Myoken Hayama and Reverend Tomohiro Kimura of Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple.
At Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul, with the historic Gyeongbokgung Palace in the background, more than 700 participants took part in a series of yoga sessions. Organized by the Embassy of India in collaboration with the Korean Yoga Association, the event featured remarks from Ambassador Amit Kumar and Korean dignitaries including Yun Ho-jung, Chairperson of the Korea-India Parliamentary Friendship Group, and Ryu Seung-min, President of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee.
