British Indian  actor Dev Patel is set to direct, write, and star in a period revenge thriller titled "The Peasant".

Set in 14th-century India, The Peasant follows a shepherd who embarks on a violent quest for vengeance after mercenary knights decimate his village. As the story unfolds, the character’s hidden identity and past begin to emerge, promising a mix of epic historical drama and high-intensity action.

The project marks Patel’s second collaboration with Thunder Road following his directorial debut Monkey Man, which was released by Universal Pictures in 2024. Like the latter, which centered on a young man’s personal vendetta in modern-day India, The Peasant revisits themes of revenge—this time through a historical and mythic lens.

The original screenplay was penned by Will Dunn, a writer on Marvel’s Ms. Marvel. Initially set in Italy with a papal storyline, the narrative has been reworked by Patel and Dunn to reflect an Indian setting described as vibrant and mystical.

The script was featured on the 2023 Black List, an annual survey of Hollywood’s most popular unproduced screenplays.

Fifth Season is financing and producing the feature. Its film division, led by Christopher Slager, has previously supported a wide range of titles, including Michael Bay’s Ambulance, David Ayer’s A Working Man, and the critically acclaimed Flora & Son and The Lost Daughter. Its upcoming release, Friendship—starring Paul Rudd and Tim Robinson—is set to debut via A24.

Thunder Road Pictures brings considerable experience in action franchises, having produced the John Wick and Sicario series. The company’s next project, Fight or Flight, featuring Josh Hartnett, is scheduled for release later this month.

Casting details and a production timeline for The Peasant have not yet been announced.
