Rep. Ami Bera, a physician and former member of the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, on May 27 criticized the Food and Drug Administration's new COVID-19 vaccine guidance that limits approval to older adults and people with underlying health conditions. The policy notably excludes healthy children and pregnant women.
Bera joined seven other Democrats who also served on the select subcommittee in the previous Congress—including Ranking Member Raul Ruiz, M.D. (D-CA), and Reps. Deborah Ross (D-NC), Jamie Raskin (D-MD), Debbie Dingell (D-MI), Kweisi Mfume (D-MD), Robert Garcia (D-CA), and Jill Tokuda (D-HI)—to issue a joint statement calling the decision “perplexing.”
