Prof. Chennupati Jagadish, Institution of Eminence Chair Professor at the University of Hyderabad (UoH), was on May 13 elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS), UK.
Prof. Jagadish is a physicist, materials scientist and technologist, who has made pioneering and sustained contributions to semiconductor optoelectronics and nanotechnology.
Over 90 researchers from across the world have been elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society this year. Celebrating their election, Sir Adrian Smith, President of the Royal Society said: “It is with great pleasure that I welcome the latest cohort of outstanding researchers into the Fellowship of the Royal Society…their achievements represent the very best of scientific endeavour, from basic discovery to research with real-world impact across health, technology and policy.”

As a renowned expert in his field, Prof. Jagdish has contributed to the development of new types of LEDs, lasers, and nano-devices for optoelectronic applications. His work has been widely recognized, with over 800 publications and nearly 38,000 citations.
He is currently Emeritus Professor at the Department of Electronic Materials Engineering at the ANU Research School of Physics and Engineering, Australian National University. He is also the first person of Indian origin to be appointed as President of the Australian Academy of Science.
Prof. B.J. Rao, Vice Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad, praised Prof. Jagadish’s “contributions to Science, Technology & Society”.
In addition to his academic achievements, Prof. Jagadish and his wife, Dr. Vidya, have contributed to social causes through the Chennupati and Vidya Jagadish endowment fund. The fund provides students and researchers from developing countries with opportunities to pursue collaborative research at the ANU Research School of Physics and Engineering.
