Over a dozen Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) elected officials have officially endorsed Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's bid for the U.S. Senate.

This endorsement underscores the growing support for Krishnamoorthi's campaign to succeed retiring Illinois Senator Dick Durbin.

Krishnamoorthi, a Democrat representing Illinois' 8th Congressional District since 2017, made history as the first South Asian American to represent the state in Congress. If elected to the Senate, he would become the first Indian-born American to serve in the upper chamber.

State Representative Janet Yang Rohr, chair of the Illinois Asian American Caucus, expressed her support, stating, "Throughout his career, Raja has been an outspoken champion for the AAPI community, dedicating much of his time in Congress to issues critically important to us, like immigration, education, and healthcare."

State Representative Sharon Chung added, "We need a Senator who has the experience to fight and win for Illinois. Raja has the track record and deep understanding of Washington D.C. that will make him a superb U.S. Senator."

Krishnamoorthi's campaign has also garnered support from other key communities. Recently, a coalition of Latino leaders, including former Congressman Luis Gutiérrez, endorsed his Senate bid, highlighting his commitment to working families and standing up to powerful interests.

Additionally, the Indian American Impact Fund has endorsed Krishnamoorthi, praising his dedication to expanding economic opportunities, enhancing national security, and promoting government accountability.

Krishnamoorthi underscored the importance of representation and his commitment to elevating AAPI voices at the federal level.

“There’s this old saying: if you don't have a seat at the table, then you're on the menu,” Krishnamoorthi said. “In Congress, I've been fighting for nearly a decade to ensure that the AAPI community has that proverbial seat at the table, and in the U.S. Senate, I intend to keep up that fight to make our voice heard loud and clear.”

“When our government looks like America, it can better serve all Americans. I am immensely proud to have the support of such incredible Illinois leaders and look forward to being the champion our community needs in the U.S. Senate,” he added.

The race to replace Senator Durbin is shaping up to be highly competitive, with Krishnamoorthi facing challengers such as Illinois Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton and U.S. Representative Robin Kelly in the Democratic primary.
