Elon University commemorated its 13th annual Holi celebration indoors this year due to inclement weather. The typical colorful powder was replaced with flower petals to adapt to the indoor setting.

The celebration was organized on April 25 by the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, a campus institution dedicated to supporting the university community through religious and spiritual exploration.

Over 125 participants, including students, faculty and staff, attended the celebration at Numen Lumen Pavilion. The program began with an educational presentation on the significance of Holi, followed by student reflections and a performance by the university’s bollywood dance team, Surtal. Attendees then participated in a petal toss inside the Pavilion.

“Although it is not the Holi everyone expected, I am so happy with how it turned out. Despite big changes and new traditions, it was a joy to meaningfully educate the Elon community about Holi. Despite us being in the minority here at Elon, it always makes me incredibly proud to see how eager people are to learn and celebrate. Seeing everyone come together was so fulfilling,”  intern Ahron Frankel, a member of the campus Hindu community said.

The celebration included additional activities such as Rangoli design, kite flying, henna art, and traditional Indian snacks. Multifaith interns Morgan Williams, Ahron Frankel, and Lizeth Torres-Tomas worked closely with Hindu and South Asian students to ensure the program was culturally respectful and educational.

“One wonderful thing about our multifaith festival series is that there’s always an opportunity to learn something new,” said Hillary Zaken, director of Multifaith Programming and Engagement at the Truitt Center.

The Holi celebration is part of the Truitt Center’s broader effort to engage the Elon community with global religious and cultural traditions through inclusive programming.
