In a proud moment for the Marathi-speaking diaspora, Indian American Congressman Shri Thanedar this week rose on the House floor to recognise the North American Film Association (NAFA) for its contributions to promoting Marathi cinema and culture across North America.

“By making Marathi cinema more accessible, NAFA aims to preserve Maharashtra's rich cultural heritage, bridge cultural boundaries, and create a more diverse arts and culture space,” said Thanedar, the first Marathi-speaking member of the U.S. Congress.

Founded by filmmaker and philanthropist Abhi Gholap, NAFA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting independent and culturally significant filmmaking in the United States and Canada. Through initiatives like fiscal sponsorships, masterclasses, and film festivals, NAFA is helping amplify the voices of regional Indian storytellers and connect them with global audiences.

The organization will host its flagship event — the Marathi International Film Festival — from July 25 to 27, 2025, at the historic California Theatre in San Jose. The festival will feature a curated slate of Marathi feature films, short films, student works, and web series, all subtitled in English to reach broader audiences.

In his remarks, Congressman Thanedar also recognized Gholap’s humanitarian work through the Jiji-Bhau Cancer Foundation, which supports children battling leukemia in rural India.

“Best wishes to NAFA from this Marathi-speaking Congressman,” Thanedar said, before concluding in Marathi, “Tumchya Marathi bolnarya Congresssadaashyakadun uttam shubhechha.”

NAFA’s efforts come at a time when regional Indian cinema is gaining international recognition. The organization’s commitment to fostering artistic excellence, supporting filmmakers, and building cross-cultural connections has made it a beacon for diaspora-led cultural initiatives in North America.

The upcoming film festival in San Jose is expected to attract filmmakers, artists, and cinema lovers from across the U.S., India, and beyond.
