Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil, the Kerala-born chairman and CEO of Burjeel Holdings, has announced a US$4.07 million (AED 15 million or INR 37 crore) fund to reward thousands of frontline healthcare workers across the group.

Unveiled during a leadership address at Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Arena, the initiative is part of the newly launched BurjeelProud program, designed to recognize the vital role staff play in patient care.

The event, attended by 8,500 employees, is considered one of the largest CEO-led gatherings in the UAE’s healthcare history. During the address, frontline workers received real-time SMS notifications confirming their inclusion in the financial recognition scheme.

Around 10,000 frontline employees will benefit from the first phase of the initiative, covering nearly 85 percent of the group’s nursing, allied health, patient care, operations, and support workforce. The financial recognition is expected to be equivalent to approximately half a month to one month of basic salary, depending on role and category.

The recognition initiative forms part of Burjeel Holdings’ next phase of growth, Burjeel 2.0, with a focus on execution, accountability, and people-led growth. During the address, Dr. Vayalil also outlined the Group’s long-term vision for its flagship facility, Burjeel Medical City in Abu Dhabi.

The vision involves evolving it into a next-generation medical city ecosystem by 2030, moving beyond the traditional hospital model by integrating complex clinical care with research, medical education, rehabilitation, and patient-centered living environments, in alignment with Abu Dhabi’s long-term healthcare strategy.

Addressing employees during the town hall, Dr. Vayalil emphasized that the initiative was not tied to any conditions. “This is neither a reward for a department nor tied to conditions. This is not because you asked. This is because you are the people on the ground,” he said. He praised the contribution of frontline workers and noted that the initiative reflected a commitment to giving back to the country that enabled the group’s growth.

The announcement was lauded by the employees during the event, with many frontline workers describing the initiative as a rare and deeply personal acknowledgment of their daily efforts in delivering care. “It was a real surprise. It felt like a moment for all of us on the frontline,” said a nurse after the event.
