The Community Impact Award acknowledges students who have made significant contributions to their campus and broader communities through leadership, service and interdisciplinary engagement. Velamala’s approach to sustainability, both academically and personally, stood out a mong this year’s honorees.

“I’ve spent countless hours expanding my craft of handmade, sustainable living,” she said. “These rituals aren’t just hobbies—they’re a reminder that sustainability isn’t just something I study, it’s something I live, one small, intentional act at a time. I think receiving this award reflects my commitment to interdisciplinary learning and honoring the human side of engineering,” she said.

Reflecting on her journey, Velamala encourages students to step out of their comfort zones. “Try new things with an open heart. Community will follow,” she said.

After graduation, Velamala plans to intern as a process engineer at a water treatment facility before traveling to more than a dozen countries, including Thailand, South Africa and Egypt.
