Indian-origin physician Akshay Sood was named Ohio State University’s 2026 Early Career Innovator of the Year. The honor was presented during the Enterprise for Research, Innovation and Knowledge’s annual Research and Innovation Showcase.
Sood is a urologic oncologist specializing in prostate and bladder cancers at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute.

His research focuses on developing novel therapies and diagnostic methods for prostate and urothelial cancers through biomarker-driven, investigator-initiated clinical trials.
Sood said his work spans both surgical innovation and translational research. He has collaborated with the CDME team to develop a novel biopsy device aimed at improving risk stratification for patients with urothelial cancer.
“We did receive an accelerator award which helped us develop our biopsy device from an idea to an alpha prototype, which we have tested on the bench and seems to be working well,” Sood said.
He said patient interactions continue to shape his research and innovation efforts.
“Probably the most important inspiration was the patients,” Sood said. “Just talking to the patients and listening to what their goals are, what their needs are, I think has helped me think about what we can do to innovate and develop new technology to help them.”
Sood also highlighted the collaborative nature of scientific research.
“I don't think anybody who wants to do really meaningful research can do it alone,” he said. “So although I'm standing here by myself, I do want to say that I work as part of a team.”
In addition to his clinical work, Sood specializes in robotic surgery and other minimally invasive surgical techniques used in the treatment of urologic tumors.
Sood has received multiple honors for his research, including the John D. Silbar, MD Award from the American Urological Association. He has authored more than 225 research papers, editorials and book chapters published in journals including JAMA Internal Medicine, Journal of Clinical Oncology, BMJ, Annals of Surgery, European Urology and Journal of Urology.
He also has written more than 500 peer-reviewed abstracts presented at national and international urology and oncology conferences.
Sood completed fellowships at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Henry Ford Health System and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He earned his doctor of medicine degree from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
