Rep. Thanedar slams Trump tariffs as burden on Americans

“These tariffs represent the latest betrayal of the American people by President Trump and his Republican cronies,” Thanedar said.

Indian American Congressman Shri Thanedar (MI-13) has sharply criticized President Donald Trump’s latest tariff hikes, calling them a “betrayal” and a direct financial burden on American consumers.

“These tariffs represent the latest betrayal of the American people by President Trump and his Republican cronies,” Thanedar said in a statement. “Despite repeatedly promising to cut your costs on day one, these import taxes are just one more way President Trump has increased the cost of living.”

The criticism comes as Trump announced new tariffs of up to 25 percent on a broad range of imports from countries including Canada, Mexico, India, and China. The administration has argued that the move is intended to boost American manufacturing and reduce reliance on foreign goods. However, economists and lawmakers like Thanedar have warned that the policy could backfire.

Thanedar, who represents parts of Detroit and surrounding areas, said the tariffs are already contributing to rising prices, economic uncertainty, and job losses. Citing recent labor data, Thanedar pointed to the “worst jobs report since before the COVID-19 pandemic,” including a 7.2 percent unemployment rate among Black workers and a sharp drop in manufacturing jobs, particularly in the Midwest.

“It’s clear that Trump’s tariffs are already having negative economic consequences,” Thanedar said, urging the President to shift to “a more stable and thoughtful trade policy that makes a genuine effort to lower the cost of living for working Americans.”

His remarks follow months of warnings about the impact of aggressive tariff policies on Michigan’s economy, particularly the auto and manufacturing sectors. In April, Thanedar addressed workers outside a Stellantis assembly plant, cautioning that escalating trade tensions could trigger price increases and lead the U.S. economy toward recession.

Stellantis has temporarily idled two major plants in Michigan and indicated that as many as 330 jobs could be affected due to supply chain disruptions linked to new trade restrictions.

Thanedar also warned of broader economic consequences if key trading partners retaliate with their own tariffs—moves that could further destabilize key U.S. industries and put high-wage jobs at risk.
