Indian-American academician Monti Datta has been honored with the Spirit of Ubuntu Award by the Bonner Foundation, which recognizes “individuals who embody the spirit of community engagement.”
The award was presented during the Foundation’s annual Bonner Summer Leadership Institute, hosted this year at the University of Richmond.

An associate professor of political science at the University of Richmond, Datta was recognized for his dedication to creating meaningful civic engagement opportunities for students and fostering social justice dialogue on campus and beyond.
Since joining the university in 2009, Datta has taught a range of courses including international relations, human rights and modern slavery, global governance, and research methods. Datta's passion for international education was sparked during his early career, teaching in South Korea and Japan through the EPIK and JET programs.
In recent years, Datta has collaborated closely with student organizations to elevate awareness on social justice and equity, emphasizing the importance of honest conversations and courageous activism. His approach aligns with the mission of UR’s Bonner Center for Civic Engagement, which supports some of the most robust civic engagement programming in the nation.
He earned his MPP from Georgetown University and a PhD in political science from the University of California, (UC) Davis.
The Bonner Foundation is a national organization dedicated to advancing student-centered community engagement and social justice through higher education. Established in 1988, the Foundation supports several colleges and universities across the United States through its Bonner Scholars and Bonner Leaders Programs, which provide access to education in exchange for meaningful community service.
