Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the G7 Summit in Canada, the Global Indian Diaspora Alliance (GIDA) has hailed the upcoming trip as a vital opportunity to revive and strengthen Indo-Canada relations.
GIDA described the invitation as a “soft restart” and “olive branch,” marking a potential thaw after months of strained ties caused by allegations made under Canada’s previous administration.
In a statement, GIDA said, “the invitation to PM Modi for the G7, despite India not being a member, underscores India's growing global influence as the world's most populous nation and fifth-largest economy. The diaspora sees this as a recognition of India's pivotal role in global supply chains and its importance to the world economy.”

“The Global Indian Diaspora Alliance, alongside various voices, is expressing strong support for Prime Minister Modi's G7 visit to Canada, viewing it as a pivotal moment to rebuild trust, enhance cooperation, and usher in a more constructive and mutually beneficial phase in Indo Canada relations.”
The Alliance highlighted several key areas for collaboration, including trade, critical minerals, academic exchange, and technology. GIDA emphasized that the vast Indian diaspora—comprising students, professionals, and families—is a vital link between the two democracies and should be leveraged as a diplomatic and economic bridge.
“People-to-people connections, including the large Indian student and diaspora communities in Canada, are highlighted as a foundational strength that should underpin the relationship and foster better understanding,” the statement added.
Modi’s presence at the summit, GIDA noted, reflects India’s rising global stature as the world’s most populous country and a key player in global supply chains. The diaspora views this moment as pivotal in ushering a more cooperative and forward-looking phase in bilateral relations.
