McMaster University names Tej Sandhu as residence entrepreneur

He will provide one-on-one mentorship, lead workshops, and support student-led innovations across faculties.

McMaster University’s DeGroote School of Business has named Indian-origin entrepreneur Tej Sandhu as its first Entrepreneur in Residence for the newly launched Marinucci Entrepreneurial Bridge.

Sandhu, a 2010 graduate of the DeGroote School and co-founder of Hamilton-based Merit Brewing, will mentor students, lead workshops, and support entrepreneurial initiatives across campus as part of the program.

“Becoming DeGroote’s inaugural Entrepreneur in Residence feels like a full-circle moment and a chance to help build the kind of ecosystem I wish existed back then. The Marinucci Entrepreneurial Bridge is a bold next step, and I’m excited to help shape it into a place where visionaries across disciplines can collide, collaborate and create real-world impact,” Sandhu said.

Sandhu’s entrepreneurial journey began at 16 and continued into his university years, where he launched and ran a business from his dorm room without formal support. Currently he is widely recognized for his leadership at Merit Brewing and his dedication to community-driven business. He also serves as chair of BLK Owned, supporting Black-owned businesses in Hamilton, and holds advisory roles at several local organizations.

Dean Khaled Hassanein described the new appointment as a valuable addition to the university’s innovation ecosystem. “I’m excited to welcome DeGroote alumnus Tej Sandhu as the first Entrepreneur in Residence for the Marinucci Entrepreneurial Bridge. Entrepreneurship is more than launching a new business — it’s about developing a mindset focused on innovation and the ability to navigate uncertainty,” he said.

The Marinucci Entrepreneurial Bridge is designed to break down academic silos and encourage students from all disciplines to collaborate, prototype, and launch real-world solutions.
