Indian-American political activist Saikat Chakrabarti, who is running for Congress from  California’s 11th Congressional District, officially inaugurated his campaign headquarters in San Francisco last month.

The event received a huge turnout with 465 RSVPs and over 500 supporters in attendance. In his remarks, Chakrabarti stated, “We’re still almost a year away from the primary, and seeing this kind of enthusiasm shows how ready San Francisco voters are for change.”

Attendees took part in a live Q&A with Chakrabarti and were served food from local restaurant Beit Rima.

Oscar Arbulu, the campaign’s chief organizing officer, said the campaign is focused on building what he described as “the biggest field operation in the history of congressional races,” centered on grassroots organizing and volunteer mobilization. “Our volunteer-driven approach empowers voters at every step, and we welcome anyone eager to be part of this historic movement,” Arbulu said.

Campaign manager Zack Exley said the turnout reflects an early groundswell of support. “This community support shows a real hunger for meaningful change and effective representation,” he said.

Chakrabarti, 39, is a former Harvard-trained software engineer who built early wealth working at startups and at Stripe before turning to politics. He joined Bernie Sanders’s 2015 presidential campaign and later co-founded Justice Democrats and Brand New Congress.

In 2018, he managed Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s successful congressional campaign and went on to serve as her first chief of staff, where he helped shape the Green New Deal.

He is running against Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi in California’s 11th Congressional District, framing his campaign as a generational and ideological challenge within the Democratic Party.
