New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar honored Captain Pratima Bhullar Maldonado, the commanding officer of the New York City Police Department’s 102nd Precinct, for her trailblazing achievements and steadfast commitment to public safety.
Captain Bhullar Maldonado made history in February when she was appointed to lead the 102nd Precinct in South Richmond Hill, becoming the first Sikh female commanding officer in the NYPD and the first South Asian woman ever to head a precinct in New York City.

“I call her our community’s Punjabi warrior,” Rajkumar wrote on X. “I was proud to honor her last night for keeping Woodhaven and Richmond Hill safe, bridging the community together with law enforcement, and breaking down barriers.”

Born in Punjab, India, and raised in Queens from the age of nine, Captain Bhullar Maldonado has steadily risen through the NYPD ranks. Promoted to captain in 2023, she previously became the department’s first female Sikh sergeant, first female Indian lieutenant, and first South Asian female uniformed executive.
A mother of four, Captain Bhullar Maldonado is also a vocal advocate for increasing South Asian and female representation in law enforcement.Her leadership has been celebrated by several advocacy and community organizations.
United Sikhs, a global humanitarian nonprofit, called her “an inspiration to countless individuals,” adding: “You are breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations.”
