The Consulate General of India in Shanghai hosted a National Day Reception on Aug. 16 at the Pudong Shangri-La to commemorate India’s 79th Independence Day.
The event followed a flag-hoisting ceremony held on Aug. 15 and brought together dignitaries from the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, provincial leaders from Jiangsu and Zhejiang, members of the diplomatic corps, the Indian community, and friends of India.
Consuls general from more than 30 countries, including Australia, South Korea, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, South Africa, Singapore and Malaysia, attended the reception.
Consul General Pratik Mathur said the event reflected both pride in India’s independence and the country’s growing global role. “This National Day Reception was a vibrant celebration of India’s independence and its deep-rooted connections with Shanghai. We are honored to share this moment with our esteemed guests, whose presence underscores the strong bonds of friendship and collaboration between India and China."

Mathur also highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day address, which outlined initiatives for a self-reliant India, including defense and technology self-sufficiency, semiconductor manufacturing, nuclear energy expansion and reforms in India’s goods and services tax.
Modi also announced advances in India’s space program, with a goal of establishing a national space station and supporting startups in satellite technology.
Zhang Ying, secretary general of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, congratulated India and said the reception reflected “the growing partnership between Shanghai and India” as both nations mark 75 years of diplomatic ties.
Guests were treated to traditional Indian cultural performances featuring music and dance, along with a spread of Indian cuisine that highlighted the country’s culinary diversity. Organizers said the celebration aimed to strengthen cultural exchanges and deepen ties between India and China’s eastern provinces of Shanghai, Zhejiang and Jiangsu.
