Indian American lawmakers in the U.S. Congress voiced outrage after the shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, urging immediate steps toward gun control.
“I am heartbroken by the horrific violence at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis,” Representative Shri Thanedar (D-MI) wrote on X. “Events like these should not be our ‘normal.’ The simple solution is to pass sensible gun control. Without that, these tragedies will continue to happen, and children will continue to die.”

Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, stressed that the United States remains the only country where school shootings are a regular occurrence. “My thoughts are with all those grieving in Minneapolis today. We must stop this epidemic of gun violence and finally put the lives of our kids first,” she said.
Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) described the attack as devastating for families, students, and teachers. “Two young lives were stolen and 17 others injured today in Minneapolis in yet another horrific school shooting. My heart breaks for the families, students, and teachers of Annunciation Catholic School. No parent should ever fear sending their child to school. We must come together to prevent the next tragedy,” he wrote.
The shooting occurred during a morning Mass on Aug. 27 at the Annunciation Catholic Church in southwest Minneapolis. Police said a gunman dressed in black opened fire from outside the church, spraying between 50 and 100 rounds through stained-glass windows. Two children, a boy aged eight and a girl aged ten, were killed while praying.
17 others, including 14 children, were wounded, with several in critical condition. Authorities said the suspect later died by suicide.
Local and federal agencies, including the FBI, ATF, and state authorities, responded to the scene. Officials confirmed that the immediate threat had ended and that the investigation is ongoing. The motive for the attack remains unclear.
Governor of Minnesota Tim Walz described the incident as “horrific,” noting that the first week of school should not be marred by such violence. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said that “these are kids who should be learning with their friends… attending school or church in peace,” adding that thoughts and prayers were not enough.
Senator from Minnesota Amy Klobuchar also expressed heartbreak, offering condolences to the victims and their families while praising the response of emergency personnel.
The Annunciation shooting came less than 48 hours after a separate gun attack at the Cristo Rey Jesuit Church in Minneapolis, intensifying concerns over gun violence in educational and religious settings.
