India strengthened its presence in Shanghai this month through a series of high-level diplomatic meetings, business engagements, and cultural events led by Consul General Pratik Mathur.

Mathur met newly appointed Philippine Consul General Myca Magnolia Maog Fischer to discuss enhancing India–Philippines ties, democratic values and regional cooperation.

Earlier, the Indian Consulate hosted a curtain-raiser for International Day of Yoga 2025 at the New Development Bank (NDB) headquarters. NDB president and former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff called yoga “India’s greatest gift to the world” and expressed condolences over the recent Air India tragedy in Ahmedabad.

“The United Nations adopted the proposal made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to recognize June 21st as the International Day of Yoga. Since then, this day has become a symbol of peace and resilience, values that are very important in today’s world,” Rousseff said.

Mathur also met with South African Consul General Phuti Tsipa, congratulating her on the 31st Freedom Day of South Africa and extending his best wishes for the country’s G20 Presidency. The two diplomats discussed avenues to further deepen the long-standing and friendly partnership between India and South Africa, with a focus on South-South cooperation.

The month began with India’s participation in the Consul Generals and CEOs Business Forum where Mathur promoted India as a key investment hub. Citing the "Make in India" initiative, he outlined India’s innovation-led growth to international business leaders.

“There was large scale interest amongst the invitees from across the globe for active participation in the development process that is underway in the 4th largest and fastest growing G-20 economy,” a statement said.

Mathur also engaged in cultural diplomacy on June 1 during the commemoration of Rabindranath Tagore’s 164th birth anniversary. He reflected on Tagore’s historic visit to China, reaffirming his enduring legacy.

Together, these engagements underscore India’s multi-pronged strategy to enhance its diplomatic, economic, and cultural influence in Shanghai.
