Hansal Mehta's ‘Gandhi’ will have its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
Becoming the first Indian series to feature in TIFF, the Applause Entertainment production will be a three-season biographical drama based on the books "Gandhi Before India" and "Gandhi: The Years That Changed the World" by Ramachandra Guha.
Season 1 would cover the story of Gandhi's early life as a lawyer, narrating the transformation of Gandhi from Mohandas to Mahatma.

With Pratik Gandhi playing the title role, the series will also feature Pratik Gandhi's wife, Bhamini Oza, playing the role of Mahatma Gandhi's wife Kasturba Gandhi. Also featured in the series will be Hollywood star Tom Felton who became a global sensation after playing the role of Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter series.
Director Mehta announced the world premiere at TIFF and said, "An audacious dream, born of belief and perseverance, now steps onto the world stage. Gandhi will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival 2025 as part of its carefully curated PrimeTime slate"
He added, "The first Indian series ever to be featured at TIFF. In its 50th year, this festival becomes the home for a story that is at once deeply personal and profoundly universal."
Mehta described the special occasion as "a moment of pride."

AR Rahman has composed music for the first season of the series. Rahman also shared the news of the TIFF premiere on X, and said "Glad to announce the world premiere of Gandhi at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival 2025, the first Indian series to be selected in TIFF’s prestigious Primetime slate!"

Filming for season 1 of the series completed in August 2024 and is expected to be available for general viewership in 2025 itself.
