Engineers Canada, the national organization of the provincial and territorial associations that regulate the practice of engineering in Canada, has honored Indian-origin student Neil Mitra, with the Gold Medal Student Award.

Mitra, currently completing his third year of undergraduate studies at the University of British Columbia’s School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME), has made significant contributions to biomedical innovation.

Inspired by the loss of a family member, Mitra began developing a rapid heart attack detection test strip while still in high school. After arriving at The University of British Columbia (UBC) on a full scholarship, he founded Ontario-based ‘Mitra Biotechnologies’ a pioneering startup developing patented, rapid point-of-care diagnostics.

Backed by leading investors including Cory Levy and the Alchemist Accelerator, the company is advancing nanomaterial platforms to make blood tests dramatically cheaper, faster, and more accurate, transforming disease detection and prediction in healthcare.

“I believe that human biology is the final frontier. In order to build a future for humanity, we must apply every cornerstone of knowledge and push the boundaries to build better diagnostics, devices, and systems that enable our understanding to accelerate human health and longevity,” Mitra said.

Mitra’s achievements extend beyond engineering. A Cansbridge Fellow for 2025, he is also an abstract painter and an active mentor with organizations that bridge art and science to inspire interdisciplinary innovation.

Previously he has worked at the Dr. Paul S. Weiss Laboratory at UCLA, The Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), the Dr. Robert Rohling Laboratory at UBC, and Nokia.

The Engineers Canada Awards, established in 1973, honour outstanding contributions by Canadian engineers and students. The Gold Medal Student Award honors undergraduate engineering students in Canada who exhibit exceptional leadership, resilience, and a positive impact within their academic and broader communities. Recipients are nominated by peers and selected by the Engineers Canada Awards Committee for their dedication to innovation, service, and leadership in the field.
