Music composer AR Rahman recently met OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in San Francisco to discuss his new AI-driven music initiative, ‘Secret Mountain’. The meeting, which took place at OpenAI’s office, centered on the use of artificial intelligence to develop a virtual global music band.
Rahman shared a photo of their meeting on social media, saying, “It was a pleasure [to] meet @sama at his office… we discussed ‘Secret Mountain’, our virtual global band, and to empower and uplift Indian minds to use AI tools to address generational challenges and lead the way forward.”
The project, described as a “meta band”, uses AI to blend musical influences from different cultures. In earlier posts, Rahman explained that Secret Mountain follows the story of Luna, a young woman who enters a fictional musical world. The characters she meets are shaped by diverse cultural backgrounds, with Rahman’s compositions serving as the foundation.
Srinivas Narayanan, vice president at OpenAI, also hosted Rahman for a Q&A and fireside chat. He wrote, “It was an incredible honor to host the legend @arrahman — a huge idol of mine — at @OpenAI today. Beyond being an iconic composer, he is also a true innovator… from creating the VR film Le Musk to building a metahuman digital band with Secret Mountain.”
Narayanan added, “It was inspiring to hear his thoughts on how AI is reshaping creative expression, his recent projects at the intersection of technology and the arts, and his vision for the future of music and media.”

Rahman has described Secret Mountain as both a musical and technological experiment, aiming to push the limits of what AI can do in composition and storytelling. A teaser video for the project, released last year, introduces Luna’s journey through a digitally constructed world of music and identity.
