The Senior Database Administrator (DBA) is a technical leader responsible for the design, implementation, and maintenance of high-performance, secure, and scalable database systems. In this role, you will oversee relational and NoSQL databases, ensure optimal performance and availability, and drive initiatives related to cloud migrations, modernization, and operational excellence. You will collaborate with application, infrastructure, and data teams to troubleshoot complex issues, optimize database workflows, and implement best practices. Mentoring junior DBAs and contributing to process documentation will be part of your responsibilities. This position provides the opportunity to influence architecture decisions, enhance operational reliability, and support critical business and research applications in a fast-paced environment.

Accountabilities
 

  • Monitor, maintain, and optimize relational and NoSQL database systems (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Oracle, MongoDB)
  • Perform performance tuning, analyze slow queries, and collaborate with developers to optimize application-level database interactions
  • Ensure high availability, replication integrity, disaster recovery readiness, and robust failover strategies
  • Define, manage, and test backup and recovery plans for full and point-in-time restores
  • Implement and enforce database security, auditing, and compliance standards
  • Lead upgrades, migrations, and modernization projects for cloud and on-premises databases
  • Mentor junior DBAs, review change plans, and maintain operational runbooks and documentation
  • Respond to alerts, perform post-incident analysis, and implement monitoring and alerting frameworks

     

Requirements
 

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent work experience; Master's degree preferred
  • 2+ years of experience in database administration or related technical roles
  • Expertise in cloud database platforms (AWS RDS/Aurora, GCP Cloud SQL, Azure SQL DB) and modern database systems
  • Experience with NoSQL technologies (MongoDB, Redis, DynamoDB) and backup/recovery tools (mysqldump, xtrabackup, RMAN, pg_dump)
  • Strong knowledge of security practices, encryption (TDE, SSL), auditing, and IAM strategies
  • Hands-on experience with high availability, replication, and failover mechanisms (e.g., Orchestrator, Patroni, AlwaysOn)
  • Familiarity with automation and CI/CD tools (Liquibase, Flyway, Ansible, GitOps workflows)
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work across technical teams
  • Preferred: AWS or GCP certifications, industry experience in life sciences or genomics
