Indian women advance to Badminton Asia Team Championship semifinals

With a 3-0 victory overHongkong, India advanced to the semifinals

For the first time in Indian Badminton history, the Indian women's team defeated Hong Kong 3-0 to advance to the  semifinals of the highly competitive Badminton Asia Team Championships in Selangor, Malaysia.

With the win the Indian women's team was assured of its first-ever medal in the tournament. Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu once again lead the way by defeating Lo Sin Yan Happy.

Returning from a protracted injury layoff, Sindhu outplayed at Happy at first, but after a second game setback, she had to rally to win 21-7, 16-21, 21-12 to give India the lead. 

Indian pairing of Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa also secured a win the women's doubles category. They defeated Yeung Nga Ting and Yeung Pui Lam, the world's ranked pair, 21-10, 21-14.

The quarterfinal match was subsequently concluded by Ashmita Chaliha's 21-12, 21-13 victory over Yeung Sum Yee.

Guaranteed a medal, India will now take on the victor of the other quarterfinal between China and the top-seeded Japan. In the group stage, India had stunned China 3-2.

 

Results of the Badminton Asia Team Championships (quarterfinals):

India defeated Hong Kong 3-0 in the women's match (PV Sindhu defeated Lo Sin Yan Happy 21-7, 16-21, 21-12; Tanisha Crasto/Ashwini Ponnappa defeated Yeung Nga Ting/Yeung Pul Lam 21-10, 21-14; Ashmita Chaliha defeated Yeung Sum Yee 21-12, 21-13).
