India joined England in the next phase of the FIH World Cup Hockey Tournament. In the last round of the group matches, India scored an exciting 5-3 win over its traditional rival and neighbour, Pakistan, for its second win in three matches. By virtue of this win, India finished second behind unbeaten England. Earlier, England trounced Wales 8-2 for its third successive win from as many matches.
Both Pakistan and Wales, after their defeats in their last group games, stand eliminated.
India started in style.

Supported by the tricolour hoisting of a strong overseas Indian community, India started with a bang by mounting pressure right from the hit in.
Abhishek, who scored a brace, was the first one to test the Pakistan goalkeeper in the first minute. His attempt was saved by Raza Ali in Pakistan’s goal. India continued to mount pressure and earned its first penalty corner in the fifth minute. Though the first award did not produce any results, India followed it with yet another penalty corner seconds later.
Skipper Harmanpreet Singh also scored a brace. Hardik Singh was the other scorer for India. And for Pakistan, it was Hanan who had a brace to his credit while Sufyan Khan was the other scorer.

As India kept mounting pressure, it earned its third penalty corner for India in the sixth minute, which was padded and deflected out.
Abhishek made it 2-0 after intercepting a pass from Harmanpreet in the 11th minute.
In the 13th minute, India got its fifth penalty corner without any further success. When the teams broke after the first quarter, India had taken a commanding 2-0 lead.
As the game moved to the second quarter, India earned a penalty corner in the 20th minute. This time Harmanpreet scored 3-0 following a pass that started from the rebound.
Down 0-3, Pakistan forced its way back into the game in the 22nd minute through Shahid Hanan, who scored an opportunistic goal. India immediately retaliated and hoisted its fourth goal through Abhishek.
Indian domination was so complete that Pakistan had to wait till the 24th minute to get its first penalty corner. And Sufyan Khan made full use of the opportunity to make the score 2-4 with a neat flick.
India conceded yet another penalty corner with a back-stick tackle in the 25th minute but suffered no further loss. At half-time it was 4-2 for India.
After a change of ends, India continued with its offensive. The tactics paid dividends, as from one of the Indian attacks, Aditya was brought down in the circle while attempting a shot at the goal. A penalty stroke for India followed in the 35th minute. Hardik made no mistake in making the score 5-2.
India earned a penalty corner in the 38th minute but was unproductive; it tried an indirect one but with no success.
In between, Pakistan had a penalty corner in the 41st minute.
India was unlucky to miss a scoring chance as the rising shot hit the crossbar and went out. India led 5-2 at the end of quarter 3.
India virtually gifted a goal to Pakistan in the 46th minute, leaving Shahid Hanan to score from a solo with only the goalkeeper to beat. He made the score 3-5.
Pakistan got a penalty corner in the 58th minute, but it was wasted as the indirect attempt failed. India won 5-3.
