Douglas Christian and Lalit Jha, White House summary, Nov 18, 2022

December 2022 5047 views 12:18

Douglas Christian and Lalit Jha give you a detailed overview of the outcomes from the midterm elections in the United States.

Even though the Democrats lost the House of Representatives, President Biden has emerged strong!

Chapters:

0:00 Welcome, Friday, Nov. 18. It’s cold.

The White House lantern shines. FDR says that that light on the north portico of the White House is a beacon for democracy!

00:40 A lot of things happening.

Attorney General Merrick Garland has appointed a special counsel to look into Donald Trump’s potential role in White House documents turning up at Mar a Lago, as well as if he had any responsibility for the January 6th insurrection on the Capitol.

1:09: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced her retirement from Democratic leadership.

1:40 She is passing on the baton of leadership to a new generation of politicians. Hakim Jefferies is thoroughly capable.

1:56 How has President Biden emerged after the midterm elections?

President Biden has emerged strong from the midterm elections, even though Democrats lost the House of Representatives. Usually, 30 seats from the party controlling The White House are lost in the House during midterm elections. This didn’t happen. Democrats lost some seats and the majority, but nowhere close to 30 seats.

2:29 Democrats made a daring bet to support hard-right MAGA Republicans in the primaries, so that they would run against them in the general midterm elections. This could have backfired, but it didn’t.

However, a Republican majority in the House marks the end of President Biden’s legislative agenda. There could be a government shutdown. Republicans promise gum up government with a slew of investigations, including looking at Hunter Biden, Merrick Garland, the FBI, and they promise to look into funds going to Ukraine.

2:37 Republicans promised to fight inflation, so why are they spending their energy investigating one family, the Bidens, rather than the larger family, the American family?

That is the question!

When working to pass the Affordable Care Act, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi asked her caucus not to focus on re-election, but to focus on getting things done.

2:37 Before leaving for the G20 and COP27, President Biden said he would consider re-election after consulting with his family. Soon after, Donald Trump announced his candidacy for 2024, what will that mean?

It will make all the difference in President Biden’s thinking. He ran originally because the threat to democracy posed by Donald Trump.

6:09 Is it Trump vs. Biden?

Trump is weighing down the Republican party’s prospects. Many call him a loser. Florida Governor Ron Desantis has a better chance of getting the Republican nomination. But we have to see what’s going to happern. We don’t know.

6:58 It looks like President Trump won’t be on the ballot in 2024?

The more candidates run in the primary, the better it is for Trump to pick off rivals.

7:21 Anything else to discuss this week? How was President Biden’s trip to Bali?

President Biden has a very important day: his 80th birthday!

His granddaughter, Naomi Biden, is getting married to Peter Neal at The White House.

8:04: COP27 in Egypt. The United Nations declared an environmental emergency. Developing countries as developed countries to pay environmental damage they caused.

In Bali, Vladimir Putin did not show up. Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, did.

8:42: But Putin showed up in another way! He fired missiles into another country.

That may have been an accident on Ukraine’s part. Analysts don’t want to accuse to quickly, as the consequences are dire.

9:25 How did the meeting with Chinese President, Xi Jinping, go?

It went well. Presidents Biden and Xi have a longstanding working relationship. They understand each other. President Xi reportedly told President Biden that he is not intent on attacking Taiwan.
