Over 2 Lakh Indians Gave Up Citizenship in 2024 — But Why?

January 2030 299 views 03 Min 15 Sec

In 2024 alone, more than 2 lakh Indians renounced their citizenship, according to fresh government data presented in Parliament. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh shared the figures, revealing how the numbers have changed over the last five years — from 85,256 in 2020 to a peak of 2.25 lakh in 2022, and now 2.06 lakh in 2024. While the reasons for giving up Indian citizenship remain personal, the government highlights the growing importance of the Indian diaspora as a source of global networks, influence, and soft power. Today, there are over 3.43 crore overseas Indians — equally split between Persons of Indian Origin and Non-Resident Indians — continuing to keep their cultural and professional ties to India strong. This video breaks down the numbers, the trends, and what they mean for India’s global presence.
