Uday Vaidya honored as UTRF’s Innovator of the Year

Uday Vaidya, the University of Tennessee-Oak Ridge Innovation Institute (UT-ORNL) Governor’s Chair of Advanced Composites Manufacturing, has been named the Innovator of the Year at the University of Tennessee Research Foundation (UTRF) Multi-Campus Office Innovation Awards ceremony held on Nov.25 in Knoxville.

Vaidya was recognized for his contributions to advanced composites and materials science, which have revolutionized lightweight, high-performance materials used across various industries. 

His research, which has led to numerous patents, has forged impactful collaborations between academia, government, and the private sector, addressing critical global challenges.

In addition to his research achievements, Vaidya has been a dedicated mentor to the next generation of engineers and entrepreneurs. Under his guidance, his graduate students have founded three successful startups. He also actively supports other emerging ventures in the community.

Beyond academia and industry, Vaidya’s outreach efforts include the development of InnoCrate, an innovative educational toolkit designed to introduce K-12 students to the world of composites. This initiative aims to inspire young learners to pursue careers in engineering, design, and science.

Vaidya’s influence extends to licensed technologies, including partnerships with Endeavor Composites, Inc., and ThermaMatrix, Inc., both of which leverage his pioneering work. Two of his recent patents, including U.S. Patent No. 11,802,357, highlight his contributions to advancing composite materials.

The UTRF ceremony also recognized startups, new patents, and licensed technologies across the UT system. Vaidya’s leadership and collaborative spirit were highlighted as exemplary among the honorees.
