The International Society of Nephrology announced May 7 that Indian American physician Dr. Jai Radhakrishnan has been appointed the next Editor-in-Chief of ‘Kidney International,’ the organization’s flagship journal, beginning Jan. 1, 2027.

Radhakrishnan will succeed Dr. Pierre Ronco, who has led the journal since 2018 and is set to retire from the position Dec. 31, 2026.

Radhakrishnan is a professor of medicine at Columbia University Medical Center in New York and currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of ‘Kidney International Reports,’ part of the International Society of Nephrology’s journal portfolio.

The society said Radhakrishnan has played a key role in expanding ‘Kidney International Reports’ as a fully open-access nephrology publication. It also cited his editorial experience and work in advancing kidney health globally as factors behind the appointment.

“Dr. Radhakrishnan is an outstanding choice to lead ‘Kidney International,’” ISN President Dr. Marcello Tonelli said.

“His editorial expertise, global perspective, and dedication to advancing high-quality science and clinical research will ensure the journal continues to thrive and evolve,” Tonelli added. “We are confident in his ability to build on KI’s strong foundations and further strengthen its impact for the global kidney community.”

Radhakrishnan said he was honored to take on the role and acknowledged Ronco’s tenure leading the journal.

“Following in the footsteps of Dr. Ronco, whose leadership has been instrumental in shaping the journal over the past decade, is both a privilege and a responsibility,” he said.

“I look forward to serving the global nephrology community by building on this strong legacy and continuing to advance innovative, high-impact research that informs and improves kidney care worldwide,” Radhakrishnan added.

Ronco has served as Editor-in-Chief since 2018. During his tenure, the journal strengthened its standing as a publication focused on research related to kidney disease and patient care, according to the society.

‘Kidney International’ is one of the most widely cited journals in nephrology and publishes research on kidney disease, treatment and related clinical developments. The journal is the flagship publication of the International Society of Nephrology and serves researchers and clinicians working in kidney care worldwide.
