Chapman University has recognized the Shukla family for setting multiple historic records across its 165-year history, highlighting a multi-generational academic legacy rooted in teaching, mentorship, and community building.
The recognition came at the Charles C. Chapman Legacy Society dinner on April 16 in Orange, California, where university leaders honored Dr. Pradip K. Shukla, professor Yatri Shukla, and their daughter Dr. Monica Shukla-Belmontes for their unprecedented contributions.

Pradip K. Shukla, The Shah Family Endowed Chair in Innovativeness at Chapman’s Argyros College of Business and Economics, was recognized for teaching the highest number of students in the university’s history. Now in his 41st year, his record reflects decades of additional course loads, summer sessions, and a consistent commitment to the classroom.

Her connection to the university is deeply personal: she was born the same day her father began teaching there, grew up on campus, and later returned as a faculty member.
More than three decades later, father and daughter went on to co-teach an MBA class together, an uncommon academic feat that reflects the family’s deep integration into Chapman’s academic life.
Yatri Shukla, a triple alumna with degrees in food science, science education, and business administration, was also recognized for her academic and community contributions. Beyond the classroom, she played a pivotal role in supporting Indian international students, often welcoming them into the family’s home, helping them settle, and offering guidance as they adjusted to life in the United States.
Together, the Shuklas have created what many on campus informally refer to as a “home away from home” for students, particularly those from India, blending academic mentorship with personal support.
The family’s legacy extends further. Younger daughter Amy Alfi was also recognized for earning three degrees from Chapman and contributing to its academic programs. Collectively, the family may hold an unofficial record for the highest number of degrees earned within a single family at the university.
Their commitment to education is deeply rooted in family tradition. Both Pradip Shukla and Yatri Shukla come from generations of educators in India and the United States, a lineage that has shaped their approach to teaching and mentorship.

As part of their enduring legacy, the Shuklas are making an estate gift to support the Hindu Vedic Fund at the Fish Interfaith Center, aimed at fostering dialogue and engagement around Hindu philosophy and identity among students.
The university’s recognition of the Shukla family reflects not only record-breaking achievements but also the broader impact of Indian American educators in shaping institutions, mentoring generations of students, and building community far beyond the classroom.
The Charles C. Chapman Legacy Society inducts those charitable and visionary individuals who, through their estate plans, make substantial contributions to the future of Chapman University.
