Australia’s Deakin awards scientist for advancing India ties

His honorary doctorate certificate credited him with helping with the university’s reach in India through his leadership.

Indian scientist Shekhar C. Mande has been awarded an honorary doctorate by Deakin University, a public university based in Victoria, Australia, in recognition of his contribution to international research collaboration and strategic advisory positions.

The honour was awarded on the occasion of Deakin University, which is the first overseas university to establish a campus in India, celebrating its first graduation day at GIFT City, Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

Mande took to social media to express his gratitude for the recognition and wrote on LinkedIn,

“Privileged to receive honorary doctorate (Honoris causa) from the Deakin University. This was at GIFT city, Gandhinagar. The occasion was historic, as Deakin University, the first overseas University to set up a campus in India, was celebrating its first graduation day. Thank you all for this honour.”

 



He specially thanked Subramanian Ramadorai, former CEO and MD of Tata Consultancy Services, for his “consistent mentorship” along with Anand Deshpande, founder and chairman of Persistent Systems, for offering philanthropic support.

Mande’s honorary doctorate certificate from Deakin also credited him with advancing the university’s reach in India through his leadership. It read,

“For distinguished contribution to international research collaboration and strategic advisory positions, particularly through his leadership in advancing Deakin's engagement in India and fostering impactful research partnerships through his extensive professional networks.”

Mande holds the position of Distinguished Professor in the Bioinformatics Centre of the Savitribai Phule Pune University (Formerly University of Pune), funded by Deshpande, since October 2022. He is also currently an Honorary Professor at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR).

According to LinkedIn, Mande has also been a visiting professor at the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur and Bombay.

He has previously served as the Director General, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Secretary, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Govt of India from October 2018 to April 2022.
