New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani on Aug.10 extended Rakshabandhan greetings in a short video posted on X, saying, “Hello everyone! I am just popping in to wish you all a happy Rakhi. I hope you’re having a lovely day with family, wherever you may be.”

The video, however, faced racist backslash on X.

Rakshabandhan, a Hindu festival, is observed annually when sisters tie an auspicious thread around their brothers’ wrists in exchange for gifts.
