The India-US relationship—hailed for its strategic depth and economic promise—has entered uncertain territory following President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a sweeping 50 per cent tariff on all Indian imports. The move, executed through a fresh executive order, has triggered concern among foreign policy experts, business leaders, and Indian American community members who fear it could undo decades of progress in bilateral ties.

“In a relationship where both countries have much to gain—and more to lose in conflict—the repoliticization of India-US ties is a slow-motion catastrophe,” said Evan A. Feigenbaum, former U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia and now a vice president at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
