President Donald Trump said the United States must remain ahead of China in the global race for artificial intelligence, describing AI as a technology with greater long-term significance than the internet.

In an interview with CNBC, Trump said maintaining U.S. leadership in AI is a strategic priority because the country that leads the technology will hold a significant global advantage.

"AI is bigger than the internet," Trump said, adding that he believes the United States is "substantially" ahead of China and other countries in AI development.

Trump said the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure will require a major increase in electricity generation. He said his administration has allowed companies investing billions of dollars in AI infrastructure to build their own power generation facilities to meet future energy demand.

"We need double the energy, double the electricity that we have right now" to support the AI industry, he said, arguing that the policy would help preserve the country's technological edge.

The president also called for a limited regulatory approach to artificial intelligence, saying safeguards are necessary but warning against excessive regulation.

"You need some guard rails, but you want to do as little as possible," Trump said, adding that his administration would move quickly if it identified security risks posed by AI developers.

Trump linked AI leadership to broader efforts to expand semiconductor manufacturing in the United States. He said major chipmakers are investing in new manufacturing facilities, including in Arizona, and predicted the country would regain a significant share of global chip production during his presidency.

He argued that the United States had previously lost much of its semiconductor manufacturing capacity to Asia, particularly Taiwan, and said rebuilding domestic production is essential for long-term technological competitiveness.

Trump also disclosed that his administration had sought an equity stake while assisting struggling chipmaker Intel, saying the approach generated substantial value, though he did not provide additional details.

Artificial intelligence has become a central area of strategic competition between the United States and China, with both countries investing heavily in advanced computing, semiconductors and AI applications. Governments increasingly view AI leadership as critical to future economic growth, national security and technological influence.
