SALC project enables translation of South Asian literature into English
According to the SALT project website, less than 1 per cent of translated literature published in the United States over the past 10 years was originally published in South Asian languages.

University of Chicago's Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations (SALC) in partnership with the American Literary Translators Association, English PEN, the British Council and Words Without Borders announced the launch of the South Asian Literature in Translation (SALT) project.
A multi-year initiative to fund the translation of South Asian literature into English, the project will be formally launched on July 1, 2023. Funding for the project has come from a donor who wants to remain anonymous, a release by the SALC said.
SALT will translate written work from many South Asian countries, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, into English for publication worldwide.
Additionally, the project will establish a literary translation summer school with a focus on South Asia. Eight mentorships for translators working with South Asian languages, a series of workshops for publishers across South Asia, and multiple grant programs for both will be offered as part of the project.
“With this project, we aim to bring some of the extraordinarily rich literature of the subcontinent to publishing markets where it has thus far been severely underrepresented,†co-directors Jason Grunebaum and Daniel Hahn said in the release.
“SALT is an astutely planned effort to provide South Asian literature in translation with a much-needed boost of funding and training. The impact will be felt not just in the United States, but also worldwide,† Daisy Rockwell, SALT advisory board member and 2022 International Booker Prize co-winner commented on the intiative.
“This is the impetus that the extraordinary works of literature of South Asia in translation need to break into the Anglophone world. From translator training through publication to marketing, the support that these pieces of literature will receive is historic,†Arunava Sinha, translator and SALT advisory board member said.

मोरक्को, बहरीन, तुर्की, ईरान, लेबनान, भारत, माली, फिलिस्तीन, ग्रीस, पाकिस्तान और सेनेगल के 11 अग्रणी कलाकारों को उनकी असाधारण कलात्मकता और अपने-अपने समुदायों और परंपराओं में योगदान के लिए पुरस्कार प्रदान किए गए।
भारतीय संगीतकार नसीर और नजीर अहमद खान वारसी इस पुरस्कार के 11 विजेताओं में शामिल थे। वारसी बंधु दक्षिण एशिया के भक्ति सूफी संगीत, कव्वाली, के अग्रणी कलाकार हैं।
वे प्रसिद्ध कव्वाल बच्चे वंश से संबंधित हैं, जो 13वीं-14वीं शताब्दी के कवि-संगीतकार अमीर खुसरो द्वारा प्रशिक्षित गायकों का मूल समूह है, जिन्हें कव्वाली का संस्थापक माना जाता है।

आगा खान संगीत पुरस्कारों के निदेशक, फैरोज निशानोवा ने कहा कि आज रात इस मंच पर मौजूद प्रत्येक कलाकार ने हमें यह याद दिलाया कि क्या जरूरी है। संगीत जीवन का एक सहायक उपकरण नहीं है, बल्कि स्वयं जीवन है, जो ध्वनि में रूपांतरित होता है।
