The Consulate General of India in Seattle officially inaugurated its new chancery premises on Aug. 26, marking a significant milestone in India–U.S. engagement in the Pacific Northwest.
The inauguration was led by India’s Ambassador to the United States Vinay Kwatra in the presence of Washington State Governor Bob Ferguson, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell, and Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell.

Speaking at the event, Governor Ferguson described the opening as a landmark step in strengthening bilateral ties and deepening India’s connections with the region.
Located at 1015, 2nd Avenue in downtown Seattle, the chancery occupies two floors of the Federal Reserve Building. The first floor houses the Consular Section, while the eleventh floor accommodates administrative and commercial wings. The building, which previously functioned as the Seattle branch of the Federal Bank of San Francisco between 1951 and 2008, has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2013.
The Seattle consulate is the sixth Indian consulate in the United States. Announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June 2023, it began functioning from a temporary site in November that year. Since initiating full consular operations in July 2024, the mission has served nearly 23,722 applicants across its jurisdiction, covering nine U.S. states.
The inauguration also included an interactive session between Ambassador Kwatra and representatives of the Indian American community, as well as meetings with Washington State leaders and executives from the region’s technology sector.
