Randeep S. Dhillon, an Indian American Republican candidate in California’s 2026 gubernatorial race, faced criticism over his fluency in English as seen in recent campaign videos.

Clips from Dhillon’s campaign videos circulated on social media, where users mocked his speaking style and raised doubts about his candidacy.

One user wrote, “Meet Randeep Dhillon, who is running in California’s gubernatorial race. His most recent campaign ad shows him, barely speaking English, while claiming he somehow wants to fix literacy in CA. No this is not satire. Yes, this is very real.”

Another post said, “This guy is running on fixing literacy in CA but can't speak English for the ad. This is real.”

Other users pushed back against the criticism, arguing that Dhillon’s message on affordability and economic issues should be evaluated beyond his fluency.

Dhillon has centered his campaign on lowering the cost of living and addressing inflation. “My mission is the same… make affordable California again,” he said in a campaign video, pointing to housing, fuel, and grocery prices. “Inflation is skyrocketing… our politician has no clue what general Californian public is going through.”

He added that rising costs affect all sectors of the state. “California's challenges affect every community… These challenges require balanced, economically sound solutions guided by facts and accountability,” he said.

In his official candidate statement, Dhillon said he is running to provide “practical leadership focused on affordability, public safety, and long-term economic security.”

Dhillon’s platform includes proposals to standardize water pricing across districts to support farmers and promote a mix of conventional and renewable energy to stabilize fuel costs. He has also called for reducing regulations on small businesses and expanding access to capital.

His campaign also proposes developing California-based operating systems and technology infrastructure to retain jobs and data within the state, along with initiatives focused on women’s economic advancement, veteran support, and privacy protections.

Dhillon, a Punjabi-American who immigrated to California from India in 1986, has worked in small businesses and farming operations and holds degrees in finance and economics. His campaign operates under the slogan “Make Affordable California Again” (MACA).

He is among several candidates contesting the June 2, 2026 primary in a crowded race to succeed term-limited Governor Gavin Newsom.
