Former federal prosecutor Hetal Doshi has bowed out of the race for Colorado attorney general after losing earlier this week in the Democratic primary. Jena Griswold won the primary in a crowded field that included Doshi, Michael Dougherty, and David Seligman. Griswold now advances to the November midterm election against Michael Allen, who won the Republican primary. On Thursday, Doshi took to social media to share a heartfelt message, thanking her supporters for their dedication to her campaign. “Last night didn’t go the way we had hoped. I’m disappointed. But I woke up today proud and grateful,” she shared.

She quoted one of her favourite poems from Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, which she felt was particularly apt for her: I slept and dreamt that life was joy.

I awoke and saw that life was service.

I acted, and behold, service was joy.

Doshi, who had earlier served as the head of the US department of justice’s  antitrust division under President Joe Biden, said in her post that over the past year, she had fought to serve Colorado – and this fight had been the greatest joy of her professional life. “So many of you opened your homes to me, trusted me with your fears about the future, and showered me with more generosity, love, and friendship than I could ever have conceived.

“You did so not because I was a proven political candidate who had something in the way of establishment bona fides. Instead, as I heard over and over again, you joined me on this journey because you saw a little of your own family’s story in mine, and a broader vision for the America we love.”

Doshi's campaign website said she had ‘spent her career in law enforcement, not politics’ and she had made her mark by taking on the toughest fights from tech monopolies to violent criminals.

“Over the course of this year, we have upended conventional wisdom and smashed expectations every day. We broke the Day 1 fundraising record. We collected more than 12,000 signatures to get on the ballot. We launched ads that have received millions of views. We released an incredible open letter of support from more than 50 former DOJ officials, each of whom had worked with me. A year ago, I’m not sure if 12000 Coloradans knew my name. One year later, 120000 Coloradans chose us among a crowded field,” she said in her post as she bowed out of the race,” Doshi said in her message as she conceded defeat.

Doshi, who has nearly two decades of legal experience and obtained her law degree from the University of Virginia, felt that while the milestones during her campaign have been incredibly meaningful, the campaign had always been about something more. “What I will take away from this experience are the quiet moments when I paused in my stump speech to see someone wiping away a tear. Tears of hope. A real authentic feeling in the jaded, broken world of politics.”

Hope and belief in possibility was what drove Doshi’s parents to take the big gamble on their future in America. “And so too for me. I ran a race I am proud of – one that was grounded in my story, our shared values, and a belief that the future rests in building a community, not turning neighbours into enemies.”

She pledged that despite the disappointment she will continue to find joy in service and hoped that her supporters would join her in continuing the fight for a better future all.
