Darpan Jain, a 2001-batch IAS officer from the Karnataka cadre and a Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has been appointed India’s chief negotiator for the upcoming trade talks with the United States.
The negotiations, scheduled for Dec. 10 and Dec. 11, will cover the full slate of trade issues as both countries work to advance a Bilateral Trade Agreement.
Jain, 48, succeeds Rajesh Agrawal, who previously held the role and was recently appointed Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce. Agrawal will oversee the upcoming discussions.

Jain has played a key role in several bilateral trade negotiations over the past six years at the Commerce Ministry and is recognized for his expertise in international trade policy.
A high-level delegation from the Office of the US Trade Representative, led by Deputy USTR Ambassador Rick Switzer, will be in India from Dec. 9 to Dec. 11 for the talks.
Jain holds a B.E. from Delhi University, an M.Sc. from the London School of Economics, and an M.Tech. from IIT Delhi.
